Final Exam Grade Calculator — Grade Calculator
Free final exam grade calculator. Find out what score you need on your final to achieve your target grade. Includes weighted grade calculator and what-if grade tool.
How It Works
This grade calculator includes three modes to help students at every stage of the semester.
Final Exam Grade Calculator: Enter your current course grade (as a percentage), the weight of your final exam (e.g., 20 for 20%), and your desired final grade. The calculator solves for the minimum score you need on the final exam to achieve your goal. Formula: Required = (Desired − Current × (1 − Weight/100)) / (Weight/100).
What-If Grade Calculator: This is the reverse of the above. Enter your current grade, the weight of your final, and a hypothetical final exam score. The calculator shows what your overall course grade would be if you scored that amount. Perfect for planning your study strategy.
Weighted Grade Calculator: Build your complete grade breakdown by adding each category (homework, quizzes, tests, projects) with its score and weight percentage. The calculator computes your weighted average and the equivalent letter grade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Complete Guide
Understanding how your course grade is calculated is one of the most valuable skills you can develop as a student. It lets you study strategically, prioritize high-value assignments, and avoid last-minute panic before finals.
**How Weighted Grades Work**
Most courses weight different assessment types differently. A typical course might weight homework at 20%, quizzes at 15%, midterm at 25%, and final exam at 40%. Your grade for each category is multiplied by its weight, and the products are summed to produce your overall course grade.
The key insight: **not all grades are equal.** A 90% on a 5-weight quiz adds very little to your overall grade. A 65% on a 40-weight final exam can drastically lower it.
**Strategic Use of the Final Exam Calculator**
Use this tool before studying to determine exactly how much the final matters for your target grade. Common scenarios:
- "I have a 91%. If the final is 25% and I get a 70%, what's my grade?" → Use What-If mode.
- "I want a 90% in the course. My current grade is 87%. The final is worth 30%. What do I need?" → Use Final Exam mode.
**Letter Grade Boundaries**
Different institutions use different cutoffs, but the most common US system is: A = 90–100, B = 80–89, C = 70–79, D = 60–69, F = below 60. Some professors use + and − grades (A- = 90–92, A = 93–96, A+ = 97+).
**When It Is Too Late**
If the final exam calculator shows you need more than 100% on the final, the desired grade is no longer achievable. In this case, recalibrate your goal: what is the highest grade you can realistically earn? Then decide if it is worth contacting the professor or seeking an incomplete.
**Cumulative vs. Course GPA Impact**
A single course grade affects your GPA differently depending on how many credits it carries. A 4-credit course affects your GPA twice as much as a 2-credit course. Use the GPA calculator in combination with this tool to model the semester-level impact of different final exam outcomes.
